The Redemption Project of Washington (RPW) is a collaboration between the Washington Defender Association (WDA) and the Seattle Clemency Project (SCP) that provides holistic advocacy support in trial-level post-conviction cases.

The project is named after the Redemption Project, a behavioral health program that SCP’s Reentry Program Director Anthony Powers co-founded in 2009 during his incarceration in the Washington State Department of Corrections. Anthony believed it was possible to create a better environment in prison, hence the Redemption Project’s philosophy of “change the conversation, change the population.” The program has a proven track record of reducing violence in the prison system by helping incarcerated individuals reflect on their actions and forge a better future through conversation, intervention, and mutuality. RPW shares this collaborative approach and hopes to empower advocates, community members, and the incarcerated population to work together to transform the Second Look landscape in Washington.

Their values are:

• Connecting and supporting defenders statewide — through research and writing support, training, statewide case outcome tracking, and individualized case support — allowing defenders to do their best work. When defenders have the support they need, Washington can better serve those who have borne the burden of mass incarceration.

• Providing reentry and transition support pre- and post-release essential to achieving justice in resentencing cases for individuals who have served long prison sentences.

The Situation

As the Redemption Project grew and state legislation provided increased funding, it became important for RPW to establish an independent identity separate from SCP. This would enhance visibility, reach, and impact. Numinosity Design partnered with TeamSoapbox, which handled strategy and project management, to create a Squarespace website for RPW. The site needed to cater to the resource needs of both community stakeholders and public defenders. To accomplish this, it would include a public-facing section as well as a private, password-protected area for attorney resources. Additionally, success stories and announcements would be posted in a blog format to raise awareness and promote the RPW cause.

Our Result

The RPW now has a foundational, effective and unique brand and website from which to pursue their mission and goals. An added benefit is that they can maintain and update their new Squarespace website in-house for ease and reduction in operational costs.

This website received the 2023 AVA Digital Awards Gold Winner award.
